The Quarter Pound Staggered pickup is a high-output true single-coil, recommended for a variety of music genres including blues, classic rock, garage, heavy rock, classic metal, and nu-metal. It has a similar tonality to the SSL-4 Quarter-Pound Flat but with a staggered magnet pattern. The hand polished, quarter-inch diameter magnets are matched with a powerful coil winding to deliver great sustain, and it does not use a cover.
This pickup can be part of a calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-7 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-1’s, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility. It works well with any balanced Strat and is especially compatible with rosewood fingerboards. Available mods include reverse wound, reverse polarity (RW/RP) middle pickups for hum canceling in positions “2” and “4” on the five-way switch, as well as a tapped version for dual output levels.
The Quarter Pound Staggered pickup is known for its extra power, delivered by quarter-inch rod magnets that give the pickup extra output and punch. The staggered pole pattern produces an edgier tone with gritty midrange. It has more than twice the power of a traditional Strat single-coil, resulting in a fat and punchy midrange and a well-defined top end that’s always ready to be cranked.
The hand polished Alnico 5 rod magnets in the Quarter Pound Staggered pickup deliver sparkly midrange harmonics, great sustain, and big, full chords. It is a versatile setup, suitable for use in a set of three for a huge sounding Strat setup, or paired with the SSL-5 Custom Staggered Strat in the neck and middle for added versatility.
Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, this Quarter Pound Staggered Strat pickup features hand built bobbins using a custom high-output coil wind, diameter Alnico 5 rod magnets, and is wax potted for squeal-free performance. Notable players who use this pickup include Jon Butcher and Alex De Rosso of Dokken.
